As you can see we do have standard plans, however, we can either start your design using one, or a combination, of these plans or we can design your home from your own original ideas.
It is naturally important to you that we design a home that specifically meets your personal living arrangements and we are willing to provide this personal service and to spend the time with you to achieve a satisfactory outcome.
At your first consultation we will guide you through the building process; explain the steps that need to be taken to achieve your goal/s, for example, any issues that might arise because of the topography of your site, any possible resource consent issues, your personal preferences.

You may have decided to stay in your existing home but it doesn’t now meet the day to day needs of your family; you need more living space or that extra bedroom.
Ruben Homes can help you to decide which is the best way to resolve the problem.
Recently, when called upon to turn an existing architecturally designed four bedroom two storey home into a bed and breakfast, we worked closely with the client to redesign the floor area and keep the original character of the home. This essentially involved shifting the existing garage along by eleven metres (that formed part of the original home); building a new two storey owners/family living area where the garage had been – this formed a new ‘wing’ to the home. Then we went about changing the existing home into a bed and breakfast. This involved building on guest bedrooms upstairs and adding ensuites to the existing bedrooms; re-configuring the entrance area and adding new decking to provide more outdoor living for the guests.


Existing Homes

Ruben Homes renovates existing homes – either to their former glory or updating with modern design and materials.
Because of our forty years experience we understand the craftsmanship that is required; we have renovated listed homes as far back as the 1860’s.
It is paramount that we meet the client’s personal needs and with this in mind we can:

  • Modernise inside and/or outside keeping the character of the home
  • Enhance the character of the home whilst taking care to be faithful to the original design.

Relocated Homes

We have been called upon by several clients to renovate their relocated homes. Because of our relationship with the home relocation company we have been able to be involved with the process right from the beginning.
This has proved advantageous to the clients because they are made fully aware of what is involved with the project and we can work together to meet their expectations; the other advantage is that we can avoid any ‘horrors’ along the way.


Ruben Homes can provide consultation on renovating an existing bathroom and help you make the right choices. We have renovated many existing bathrooms into lovely spacious modern bathrooms that are built to last many years – we believe in increasing the specifications to build a truly wet area that will stand up to moisture.
This is achieved by relining the bathroom with James Hardie Villaboard – this offers exceptional moisture proofing and can be either painted, tiled or lined with James Hardie Hardiglaze. Villaboard stands up to the moisture – is fully sealed in all corners, between floor and wall joints with either fibreglass or wet seal compound.
We can also advise you on the viability of adding an ensuite to an existing bedroom.


Need a bigger family kitchen? Here at Ruben Homes we understand the importance of this room and do believe it truly is the ‘heart of the home’. With this in mind we can strip out and reline your existing kitchen to allow for the installation of a modern sustainable kitchen with the help of our kitchen supplier. We can also provide the expertise of our master plumber and electrician to make the process seamless and a true team effort.


Many older homes now are needing exterior wall maintenance and this is especially true for those homes built prior to 1970.
For example:

  • Replacing existing timber weatherboards with James Hardie Linea weatherboard – which offers durability and stability.
  • If replacing exterior cladding we can also install wall Ultra Pink Batts at the same time to meet the new H1 Building Code.
  • Will install on a cavity and building wrap systems.
  • Can upgrade existing windows, either timber or aluminium, to double glazed and redo the sills and facings.

Ruben Homes has been called upon in recent times to provide a service, helping both clients and consultants, with problems caused by ‘leaky homes’.
This has involved recommending to clients the best type of cladding for their certain situation, that is, do they want to stay with the same aesthetic look or do they want to update/change the look?
We will inspect the property and recommend how best to handle your particular situation. Your home may need other repairs due to moisture damage, for example, repairs to framing, roofing, spouting, etc. to avoid the moisture problem reoccurring.

We work with a specialist building consultant that can show you the pathway of what is required to take a claim to the Weathertightness Homes Authority. This team effort works well for the client and works in with Territorial Authorities.
